Ketika wanita cantik

Humalog - an accident waiting to happen

There have been an increasing number of significant events from both primary and secondary care concerning the prescribing and dispensing of Humalog insulin preparations.

There are now three Humalog insulin preparations:

* Humalog – a rapid acting insulin (containing 100% insulin lispro)
* Humalog Mix 25 – a mixture of rapid and intermediate acting insulin (containing 25% insulin lispro and 75% insulin lispro protamine)
* Humalog Mix 50 – a mixture of rapid and intermediate acting insulin (containing 50% insulin lispro and 50% insulin lispro protamine)

Errors have been reported where:

* The wrong product has been selected from a drop down menu in electronic prescribing or dispensing systems
* A patient has described the insulin they are on as Humalog 25, twice daily, and been prescribed Humalog (rapid acting alone, not the mix) 25 units, twice daily, when they were actually on Humalog Mix 25.

Prevention of incidents:

* Inform the patient about the risk of incidents so they are fully informed about which Humalog insulin preparation they are on and the importance of describing it accurately. This can also be written on a patient medicine card.
* Always prescribe insulin using the full brand name
* Check with the patient about which sort of insulin preparation they are on, e.g. not only the brand name but also rapid, intermediate or long acting – this acts as an extra check.

Safer prescribing of tramadol

From 1 June, 2010 tramadol will be available fully subsidised on the Pharmaceutical Schedule.

Tramadol has been used widely in hospitals for several years, but experience of its use in primary care is limited. A Prescriber Update article from Medsafe is planned to be circulated, and prescribers are advised to consult the Medicines Safety Datasheet for detailed information.

The following are some important prescribing tips for the safe and appropriate use of tramadol:

* Tramadol is not a first line analgesic. It is classed as a weak opioid on the analgesic ladder and is neither more effective, nor better tolerated, than other weak opioids such as codeine.
* For people coming off dextropropoxyphene, a straight switch to tramadol is not recommended. The patient’s analgesic requirements should be initially assessed with regular paracetamol, and then codeine added if necessary.
* Drug dependence, withdrawal reactions and misuse have all been reported with tramadol, although they are generally less problematic than with other opioids.
* Tramadol acts at opioid receptors and shares some of the typical adverse effects of opioid analgesics, including nausea, constipation and respiratory depression. However, it has additional pharmacological actions which result in a different spectrum of adverse effects and drug interactions.
* Tramadol has serotonergic effects similar to SSRIs, such as fluoxetine and paroxetine. Serotonin toxicity (and syndrome) has been reported after use of tramadol with other serotonergic agents such as antidepressants and St John’s wort.
* Changes in the INR have been reported in people taking warfarin. Monitor INR in these patients if tramadol is added or stopped.
* The seizure threshold is reduced by tramadol and the effect appears to be dose related. Extreme caution is required in people with epilepsy (only consider if epilepsy is well controlled), a history of seizures or those already taking medicines that reduce seizure threshold, such as antipsychotics and antidepressants.
* Tramadol should not be used in people:
o With acute alcohol intoxication or taking hypnotics, analgesics, opioids or psychotropic medicinal products
o Who are receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or have taken them in the past 14 days
o With epilepsy that is not adequately controlled by treatment
o With severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min) Recommended reading 1. Waitemata DHB. Tramadol- safe prescribing; consider the risks. Safer Rx. Available from: www.saferx.co.nz/full/tramadol.pdf 2. Medsafe datasheet. Available from: www.medsafe.govt.nz/profs/Datasheet/a/arrowtramadolcap.pdf NEWS UPDATE: On 26 May, 2010 the US Federal Drug Agency issued an alert, notifying prescribers of increased safety concerns with tramadol. The FDA strengthened warnings of the risk of suicide for patients prescribed tramadol, who are prone to addiction or currently taking tranquilisers or antidepressants. This follows reports of tramadol-related deaths that have occurred in patients with a previous history of emotional disturbance, suicidal ideation or substance misuse (including prescription medicines). For further information visit: www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm New evidence shows less benefit of gabapentin for neuropathic pain The effectiveness of gabapentin for neuropathic pain, including data from previously unpublished trials, has been re-evaluated. Recent litigation procedures in the United States have revealed that the promotion of Neurontin (gabapentin), for the treatment of pain conditions, was assisted by selective publication and citation of studies with favourable outcomes. Countries which have licensed gabapentin for neuropathic pain (including New Zealand) would not have had access to these hidden trials and would have based recommendations only on the available published data. Previous data indicated that gabapentin has a moderate analgesic effect in about 25 % of patients with neuropathic pain ( * Number needed to treat. NNT* of 4).1 Inclusion of the hidden data indicates that gabapentin has a minor role in pain control and that the NNT is about 6–8, that is, only about 15% of patients will derive some benefit. Furthermore, newly available information shows that adverse effects can occur such as dizziness ( † Number needed to harm. NNH† of 8), confusion or ataxia (NNH of 10) and oedema (NNH of 11). Finally, there is very little evidence that the degree of analgesia is dose related, whereas toxicity is dose dependent. Conclusions and recommendations (adapted from Therapeutics Initiative, 20102) * Evidence from all clinical trials suggests that gabapentin has a minor role in pain control * Gabapentin reduces neuropathic pain by less than 1 point on a 0 – 10 scale and may benefit about 15% of patients * Adverse effects occur in about the same number of people, although these can be relatively mild. * A test of benefit versus harm can be made after one to two days at a low dose (100 – 900 mg daily) * Benefit is unlikely to increase with higher doses or longer treatment * Gabapentin should be used with caution in people at risk of cognitive disturbance, falls or when oedema may aggravate an underlying condition * Regularly assess patients taking gabapentin. Assessment of benefits or adverse effects can be made by stopping for one to two days. As with other antiepileptics, gabapentin can increase suicidal thoughts and behaviour. Patients should be monitored for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts or behaviour, or any unusual changes in mood or behaviour.3 References 1. worldcup 2010 june 24 see what happen

Published Date: 24 June 2010
By Nick Mitchell
It's D-Day for Italy as Marcello Lippi's men aim to turn their World Cup around against Slovakia, while Denmark and Japan fight it out for the remaining qualifying spot in Group E.

Today's match schedule

• Paraguay v New Zealand, 3pm

Paraguay have made a bright start to their World Cup campaign and they will go into their final Group F match with an attacking line-up to confirm their progress. New Zealand are expected to be unchanged for the third successive game, and if they win they'll make the last 16 - unthinkable before the tournament began. Draw and the All Whites will have to rely on Slovakia.

• Slovakia v Italy, 3pm

Italy will be determined to put Sunday's alarming draw with New Zealand behind them and live up to their status as champions in this final group game. Coach Marcello Lippi is likely to ring the changes, and could bring in strikers Antonio Di Natale and Giampaolo Pazzini. Slovakia must win to keep their slim hopes alive, and hope that Paraguay beat New Zealand.

• Cameroon v Netherlands, 7.30pm

This game may be meaningless but it could still provide excellent entertainment. Cameroon's draw with Denmark was one of the games of the tournament so far, and Samuel Eto'o and his less celebrated teammates will be aiming to go out on a high. The Dutch will be equally determined to maintain their 100% record, and with an unchanged team, they'll be hoping to add some flair to their clinical form so far.

• Denmark v Japan, 7.30pm

Few fancied Japan to make it out of Group E, but if they draw against the Danes this evening, that's exactly what they'll do, thanks to a slightly superior goal difference. Denmark have struggled in their first two games but took their goals well against Cameroon. Coach Morten Olsen may well hope his side's height advantage is a key factor at set pieces.

Yesterday's 140 character match reports

#ENG England 1 - 0 #SVN Slovenia: England make it through to last 16 of #worldcup What's happening? after a nervous 93 mins. Jermain Defoe got the crucial 1st half goal.

• Follow us on Twitter for 140 word match reports on the final whistle

From today's Scotsman

• Capello praises team spirit as Defoe sets up last 16 clash with Germany
• Alan Pattullo: BBC team's appetite for farcical hype swings between famine and feast once more
• Italians will keep cool in group decider with Slovakia
• Dutch won't take foot off pedal and lose rhythm
• All Whites aim to make history against Paraguay
• Danes urged to treat crunch clash with Japan as a final

Fact of the Day

Japan's former Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura has an asteroid named after him: Asteroid 29986 Shunsuke.

Team of the Day

Cameroon

The World Cup will say goodbye to one of its most colourful teams (in kit and playing style) when Cameroon bow out against the Netherlands today. After a poor start against Japan with Eto'o out of position, they regained some pride against Denmark, and Paul Le Guen's men will no doubt enjoy this evening's match against the Dutch.

Ramalan mama Laurent tentang tahun 2010

Percaya atau tidak, yah terserah anda...:)
RAMALAN MAMA LAURENT TAHUN 2010 (Bagian I)

worldcup 2010 june 22

The odds were long -- too long, as it turned out -- for hosts South Africa in their quest to keep themselves alive in their own World Cup tournament.

South Africa dominated a dispirited and dysfunctional French team, 2-1 in Bloemfontein, but despite the victory, the host South Africans were eliminated based on goal difference, as Uruguay and Mexico finished first and second, respectively, in Group A and advanced to the round of 16.

South Africa, because of its crushing 3-0 loss to Uruguay in its second game, was a longshot to advance. Bafana Bafana needed to win, and needed to have the Uruguay-Mexico game not end in a tie. But the hosts -- and France, for that matter -- would need to make up a significant goal differential disadvantage.

South Africa gave itself a chance, taking a 2-0 lead in the first half, on goals by Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela, and a red card to France's Yoann Gourcuff left France playing with 10 men, which opened up the possibility South Africa might score more goals. At the same time, Uruguay's 1-0 lead over Mexico (in their eventual 1-0 victory) meant that South Africa had a real chance to make up the goal differential it needed to make up.

But six minutes into the second half, Mphela, off a setup by Tshabalala, breaks into the French penalty area, but fires his shot off the right goal post. A goal there might have changed everything. Later, in the 58th minute, another shot by Mphela is turned away by a diving French goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, and time began to become an enemy of Bafana Bafana.

Ultimately, the French, who had entered the World Cup under a cloud of discontent and controversy, put an end to South Africa's hopes when substitute Florent Malouda scored, of a pass from star Franck Ribery, in the 70th minute.

Malouda's goal was the slightest consolation for a France team that exited the World Cup in disgrace following the team's decision to boycott practice on Sunday after striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home by the French federation because he cursed out coach Raymond Domenech at halftime of their 2-0 loss to Mexico last week.

That decision, which spurred the resignation of the French team trainer and the federation president, was only the latest controversy surrounding the team. The story had begun with the Thierry Henry handball episode that got them into the World Cup at the expense of Ireland. That was followed by a sex scandal involving stars Ribery and Karim Benzema, who was subsequently left out of the 23-man squad selected by Domenech, for the World Cup. Domenech, who the French federation announced before the World Cup would be replaced as coach after the tournament, left out other big names, and had wanted to leave Henry, the team's captain, off the roster as well, before he was talked out of that idea.

An ugly scoreless draw against Uruguay was followed by a 2-0 loss to Mexico, which was followed by the federation's decision to banish striker Nicolas Anelka after his shouting match with Domenech at halftime of the Mexico game. The players boycotted practice on Sunday, and Domenech started five new players against South Africa, including benching his captain, Patrice Evra.

Full time: Final score South Africa 2, France 1. The South Africans become the first host nation to be eliminated in the first round of the tournament. Ultimately, it was a dreadful 3-0 loss to Uruguay in their second game that sealed their fate. They went out with their heads high, off a tremendous performance in their victory over France, however. For France, a sad but fitting end to all the turmoil that surrounded that team all tournament long.

92nd minute: Tshabalala, a great chance inside the box, but is denied by a save from Lloris, and then denied again when France's Gallas clears away the rebound.

91st minute: Hard shot by Modise for South Africa misses wide of the near post.

90th minute: Three minutes of added time.

88th minute: The World Cup is over for both these teams. It ends on a positive note for South Africa, at least. They played well in the end, and gave themselves a chance. France scored a goal, which is something it did not do in 2002, when it last went out in the first round. But the goal was meaningless, and helped no one except Mexico.

82nd minute: France substitution -- Sidney Govou is in for Diarra.

78th minute:

Substitution for South Africa -- Teko Modise is on for Khuboni.

75th minute: South Africa's Nomvete makes a great run into the France box, but can't get a shot off before France keeper Lloris comes off the line to scoop up the ball.

71st minute: Yellow card to France's Abu Diaby.

70th minute: GOAL! France! Substitute Florent Malouda taps in a pass from Franck Ribery, who is played in on the right wing and drives into the box. As the South African keeper Josephs comes out to challenge the shot, Ribery slides a cross over to Malouda, who is unmarked. This, surely, is great news for Mexico, as the South Africans' goal difference takes a major hit with this goal conceded.

68th minute: Siabonga Nomvethe is on for South Africa in place of Parker.

66th minute: South Africa's Tshabalala is down, and France's Ribery plays the ball out of bounds to get a play stoppage. It's a normal display of sportsmanship soccer teams do when a player is injured, except in this case, Ribery's gesture interrupts a run by France that could have led to a scoring chance.

65th minute: A handball called against Thierry Henry, wearing the captain's armband, perhaps for the final time?

62nd minute: Another chance for South Africa's Mphela, cutting in from the right. Shot wide. Just wide. He's been great.

59th minute: A chance for France's Ribery, but he shoots high from a dangerous spot.

58th minute: A diving save by France's Lloris on a hard drive by South Africa's Mphela.

55th minute: Substitutions for both teams. Siboniso Gaxa comes on for South Africa, to replace the injured Ngcongka, while French coach Raymond Domenech sends on Thierry Henry for Cisse. A terrible substitution for France. Cisse has been one of their best players in the game. Domenech is leaving after this tournament, and it appears he's checked out early.

54th minute: Cisse, for France, hammers a one-timer just high. A good chance. He's played well for France.

53rd minute: South Africa's Ngcongka is taken off on a stretcher.

51st minute: Mphela, of South Africa, fires off the right post, after another setup by Tshabalala.

South Africa kicks off to start the second half. France has made a substitution -- striker Florent Malouda is on for striker Gignac.

Halftime: South Africa leads, 2-0 and Bafana Bafana are smelling blood. Uruguay's lead over Mexico means the South African dream is possible. There is still some ground to be made up in the area of goal difference, but France is dispirited, and playing with 10 men. More goals are possible for South Africa in the second half. If Uruguay can hold on to its lead over Mexico, South Africa will be flying in the final 45 minutes as it goes for the goal.

45th minute: Three minutes of added time.

44th minute: And now word comes that Uruguay has scored against Mexico! The South Africans have a chance! At the moment, South Africa still trails Mexico in goal difference - they need to make up two more goals. But France are down to 10 men and showing nothing. It is not impossible for Bafana Bafana.

43rd minute: A shot from above the right side of the box by Mphela forces a diving save from France keeper Lloris. Whatever happens with Uruguay-Mexico (currently 0-0) South Africa is doing its job to give itself a chance to advance.

39th minute: A long free kick by Ribery penetrates the South Africa box and forces a save from South Africa keeper Josephs. Nearly 2-1 there.

37th minute: GOOOOAAALLLL!!! South Africa! 2-0, Bafana Bafana. Katlego Mphela the goalscorer, after another play started by Tshabalala, who sends in a cross from the left wing. It bounces off a France defender, but it's played back in and France's Gael Clichy has tight coverage on Mphela, but he can't find the ball and Mphela taps it in.

34th minute: A free kick, in range from South Africa's Tshabalala is pretty good, but just over the crossbar. No question who is dominating this game so far.

26th minute: Things go from bad to worse for France, as Yoann Gourcuff is red-carded by the referee for an elbow to the face of South Africa's Sibaya. It appears accidental, rather than vicious, as Gourcuff has to lift his arms and elbows as he leaps to try and head the ball. The elbow seems to catch Sibaya by chance. But the referee doesn't see it that way. France down to 10 men.

24th minute: South Africa's Mphela running to goal, hits it just wide.

23rd minute: Another corner, from the right wing again, by Tshabalala, and nearly another error by Lloris and another goal for South Africa. Lloris came off his line for the ball, then changed his mind as the ball flighted over his head. This time it's headed away by the defense.

20th minute: GOOOAALLLL!!! South Africa!!! Khumalo heads it home, off a corner kick from the right wing, a left-footed inswinger by Tshabalala. Yet another goalkeeper error creates a goal, as Lloris, the French keeper, comes out to punch the ball away and misses completely. South Africa's Khumalo is at the back post to head it in - his first goal ever for his country.

17th minute: South Africa's Sibaya a long shot, but not close to the goal.

10th minute: A header on goal, from the top of the box, by Cisse. No trouble for Josephs, but Cisse has looked good so far. Perhaps he should have started from the beginning for France?

3rd minute: Gignac, of France, is in on the left side of the box and shoots. Easily handled, though, by South Africa goalkeeper Josephs.

The host South Africans are in their preferred yellow shirts, green shorts and yellow socks. France is wearing their preferred blue shirts, white shorts, and red socks. France kicks off and the game is underway.

The lineups are out, and France coach Raymond Domenech has shaken things up. After the team rebellion Sunday, captain Patrice Evra is out, and so is defender Eric Abidal, whose two mistakes led to both goals against Mexico. In all, five new players in the starting 11 who are playing their first game in the World Cup.

France: Hugo Lloris (GK); William Gallas, Bacary Sagna, Sebastian Squillaci, Gael Clichy; Abou Diaby, Alou Diarra (C), Franck Ribery, Andre-Pierre Gignac; Yoann Gourcuff, Djibril Cisse.

South Africa: Moneeb Josephs (GK); Bongani Khumalo, Aaron Mokoena (C), Tsepo Masilela, Anele Ngcongka; MacBeth Sibaya, Thanduyise Khuboni, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker; Katlego Mphela.

top 10 tech invention shaping 2010

10. 3M/Littmann Electronic Stethoscope Model 3200 With Zargis Cardioscan

stethoscope_3M

The stethoscope hasn’t undergone many significant breakthroughs until now. 3M’s new stethoscope listens to a patient’s heartbeat, captures the sound for later playback, lets you transmit sounds real-time to your PC, which can then be further analyzed, attached to medical records, or reviewed online with colleagues.

The sound-amplifying 3M Littmann Electronic Stethoscope 3200 will not only be able to catch dangerous murmurs and heart defects but will also eliminate more than eight million unnecessary echocardiograms and cardiologist visits a year, saving some $9.4 billion.

9. Android Phone

android_phone

The Android has proven itself a force to be reckoned with, offering a legitimate alternative to the all-mighty iPhone. If you haven’t heard, Android is a Google-backed operating system for cell phones. The code is free, open-source and easy to alter. Users can create their own interfaces and control many kinds of hardware, plus it has over 10,000 Android apps.

8. The Smart Thermostat

smart_thermostat

Called one of Time Magazine’s “best new gadgets” and “breakthrough ideas of the year”, the EnergyHub Dashboard is a device that lets you know exactly how much electricity (or gas) you’re using in your home and how much it’s costing you. It also turns appliances on or off and raises or lowers temperatures within your house depending on use. EnergyHub will be available direct to consumers in early 2010.

7. Robotic Exoskeleton

Still in its developing stages, powered exoskeletons are very clunky body suits designed to provide mobility assistance for aged and infirm people, giving them 10 times their normal strength. Similar to an Ironman suit, the military has also been working on their own version in order to assist and protect soldiers. Other possibilities for the exoskeleton include rescue work, such as in collapsed buildings. The device would allow a rescue worker to lift heavy debris, while simultaneously protecting the individual from falling rubble.

6. Microsoft Project Natal

Microsoft’s prototype system dubbed Project Natal is giving a whole new meaning to gaming: gaming with no controller at all. Your movements and voice control the game. The hardware component of the Natal system includes a color video camera, an infrared emitter and sensor that give it depth perception, a mic that figures out where you are, and a microprocessor to crunch all that data. The software component digests data in real time from 48 points on the body, plus audio input and delivers perfectly smooth game control.

5. XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System (i.e. The Smart Bullet)

smart_bullet

The XM25, currently under development for the U.S. military by Alliant Tech systems, allows soldiers to measure the distance to a target using a laser range finder, dials in exactly where the bullet should explode (over or past walls, the corner of buildings) at precise distances. At a cost of $30/round, the bullets are equipped with microchips capable of registering distance according to the number of times they’ve rotated.

4. Teleportation

Okay, so we won’t be seeing teleporting machines on the market for a while, but scientists at the University of Maryland’s Joint Quantum Institute successfully teleported data from one atom to another in a container a meter away. Atom-to-atom teleportation has major implications for creating super-secure, ultra-fast computers. Maybe one day, humans as well.

3. NASA Kepler Space Telescope

To boldly go where no man has gone before- but could potentially- NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope launched in March is tasked with searching habitable Earth-like planets in distant star systems. Using a photometer that’s more than three feet in diameter, Kepler is now continuously observing some 100,000 stars located between 600 and 3,000 light-years away. Scientists hope that Kepler could find dozens of habitable planets during its three-to-four-year mission.

2. The Electric Eye

electric_eye

MIT researchers are developing a microchip that will enable a blind person to recognize faces and navigate a room without assistance, helping the blind to regain partial eyesight. The chip, which is encased in titanium to prevent water damage, will be implanted onto a patient’s eyeball. Users are required to wear special glasses fitted with a small camera that transmits images to the titanium-encased chip, which fires an electrode array under the retina that stimulates the optic nerve. The glasses will help to power the coils surrounding the eyeball.

1. Sixth Sense

SixthSense is a wearable gestural interface that bridges the gap between intangible digital information and the tangible world. Using natural hand gestures to interact with information SixthSense is comprised of a pocket projector, a mirror and a camera which allows you to interact with objects in a way never before possible. Phone Software Takes the Taps Out of Typing

Cliff Kushler invented the technology that predicts words typed on cellphones, and has a new method for touch screens.
By JENNA WORTHAM

SEATTLE — Back in the 1990s, typing out “hello” on most cellphones required an exhausting 13 taps on the number keys, like so: 44-33-555-555-666.
Enlarge This Image
Stuart Isett for The New York Times

Demonstrating the Swype software on a Samsung smartphone.

That was before the inventor Cliff Kushler, based here in Seattle, and a partner created software called T9, which could bring that number down to three by guessing the word being typed.

Now there is a new challenge to typing on phones. More phones are using virtual keyboards on a touch screen, replacing physical buttons. But pecking out a message on a small piece of glass is not so easy, and typos are common.

Mr. Kushler thinks he has a solution once again. His new technology, which he developed with a fellow research scientist, Randy Marsden, is called Swype, and it allows users to glide a finger across the virtual keyboard to spell words, rather than tapping out each letter. [Watch a demonstration of Swype on YouTube.com]

While many smartphones have features that auto-complete words, correct typos on the fly and add punctuation, Mr. Kushler is aiming for the next level.

“We’ve squeezed the desktop computer, complete with keyboard and mouse, into something that fits in a pocket. The information bandwidth has become very constricted,” he said. “I thought, if we can find a better way to input that information, it could be something that would really take off.”

Mr. Kushler says Swype is a big breakthrough that could reach billions of people. That’s not as ambitious as it sounds. To date, the T9 technology has been built into more than four billion devices worldwide. In 1999 its creators sold it to AOL for a reported $350 million; it is now owned by the speech-recognition company Nuance.

Swype’s software detects where a finger pauses and changes direction as it traces out the pattern of a word. The movements do not have to be precise because the software calculates which words a user is most likely trying to spell.

Capitalization and double letters can be indicated with a pause or squiggle, while spacing and punctuation are automatic. Mr. Kushler, who is chief technology officer of Swype, estimates that the software can improve even the nimblest text-messager’s pace by 20 to 30 percent.

Swype is now being used on seven smartphones in the United States, across all major wireless carriers, including the HTC HD2 and the Samsung Omnia II. By the end of the year, the company says its software will be on more than 50 models worldwide.

It does not have a deal with Apple, the king of touch-screen phones, but it is tinkering with software for the iPhone and the iPad and hopes to show it to Apple soon.

To make money, Swype charges phone makers a licensing fee for each device sold. It also sees opportunity in add-ons.

“We could have custom dictionaries for doctors or lawyers,” said Mike McSherry, chief executive of the company.

But Swype’s appeal goes beyond mobile phones, said Won Park, director of United States technology sourcing at Samsung.

“It could become the de facto standard for tablets, next-generation TVs or next-generation remote controls,” Mr. Park said. “It has tremendous potential.”

Swype’s executives also see its reach extending into public kiosks, smart home appliances, video game consoles and in-car navigation systems.

Some older input methods for mobile devices were based on scribbled gestures, like Palm’s Graffiti. But using Graffiti was slower than typing and forced people to learn an entirely new handwriting format to produce accurate results, said Gavin Lew, co-founder of User Centric, a consulting firm that studies user experiences with mobile devices.

“Swype-like applications rely on a well-known layout, the full qwerty keyboard,” he said. “One simply needs to target a specific letter rather than relying on a memory of how to draw a letter.”

As cellphones take on the functions of personal computers, Mr. Lew said, the need increases to quickly enter and search for information on them.

“These devices aren’t just phones anymore, which is why you’re seeing all these new technologies emerge,” he said. “The more we use them in our daily lives, the greater the need to be more efficient at inputting information.”

Mr. Kushler began experimenting with input methods in 2001, guided in part by his earlier work in helping people with disabilities use technology. He took note of the popularity of devices like those from Palm that used a stylus for input, but he saw room for improvement. He worked with Mr. Marsden to fine-tune the Swype software — which took a laborious seven years.

“The most important thing was that it could accurately figure out which word you wanted to spell,” Mr. Kushler said. “It needed to work no matter what.”

Swype is not the only start-up hoping to profit from innovations in this area. Many companies are trying to improve the way people type on touch screens, which are proliferating swiftly. The research firm Gartner expects global sales of touch-screen devices to reach 326.7 million in 2010, an increase of 97 percent from last year.

SlideIT, a start-up with offices in the United States and Israel, sells applications for touch-screen text input with a finger or stylus for Symbian, Windows Mobile and Android phones. The company says that since February its software has been downloaded more than 500,000 times.

Nuance, a company best known for speech recognition software, acquired a start-up called ShapeWriter that matches patterns traced onto a touch-screen keyboard with those of commonly written words. It is negotiating with phone makers to use its software, called T9 Trace.

Google is trying to let people skip the screen entirely by developing voice- and image-recognition technologies. Its Goggles application can analyze a photo of some text and translate it into a different language — no typing required.

Meanwhile, Swype is moving ahead with its own voice recognition feature, which it expects to add to smartphones this summer.

“We’re all about improving how people input information into their phones, whether through swiping or speaking,” Mr. McSherry said.

4th Gen iPhone May Debut June 22nd Quantcast

Although the biggest news of the day has been reserved for Apple's powerhouse internal hardware upgrades to their Macbook Pro line, there is also (potential) news worth discussing about the 4th gen iPhone. Ever since the iPhone 4.0 OS was unveiled in grand fashion with long awaited (and long overdue) features including multitasking, Apple fans have been chomping at the bit to get their first look at the 4th gen iPhone in all its glory.

Although no confirmations have yet come from Apple (naturally), there is speculation that the big reveal could take place on June 22nd. For this particular occasion, Apple has once again reserved the very conference center where the company announced the three previous versions of the iPhone. So all signs, indeed, point to June 22nd proving the 4th gen iPhone's "big day." Knowing Apple, however, we probably won't know for sure until the evening of June 21st. After all, something has to drive the rumor mill until then, right?

Like never before, the hype surrounding iPhone 4.0 OS is in full swing, months ahead of the new iPhone's debut. For now, Apple simply maintains that the hot new OS will "ship this summer" for both the iPhone and the iPad. And while a dev beta is already available, the lack of backwards compatibility with previous generations of the iPhone is rightfully making the iPhone-obsessed community uncomfortably edgy about the seemingly eternal wait before the new device is rolled out.

For what it's worth, while no concrete evidence has turned up to suggest the announcement of a Verizon iPhone at the June 22nd event, there have been unconfirmed reports suggesting the possible existence of a Verizon iPhone being used in the US in recent days. Could this be evidence leading to a major development about which we've all been sickened thanks to years of unsubstantiated rumors thus far? Your guess is as good as mine.

UN news service propagates a lie

Tuesday, June 22, 2010
IRIN, the UN's humanitarian news service, puts together a "factbox" on Palestinian "refugees."

It has the usual distortions that we are all used to (like saying that UN Resolution 194 gives Palestinian Arabs the right to return, without mentioning the important caveat there and all the other sections of that document that were vehemently rejected by the Arabs and accepted by Israel.) It also uncritically accepts the definition of "refugee" that is unique to Palestinian Arabs alone and no one else, that guarantees that the "refugee" population will grow in perpetuity.

One small part of the article shows how a lie can take hold. It says that "Estimates vary greatly on the annual rate of new displacements, but Palestinian sources cite up to 20,000 newly displaced persons per year. Reasons for new displacement include Israel’s construction of a separation barrier in the West Bank and Jerusalem, the construction of illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, the revocation of residency rights and house demolitions. "

20,000 people losing their homes every year? When a dozen people who built an illegal structure are forced to move out it generates international headlines for months. The idea that there are 20,000 cases like that every year is an insane fiction.

Yet the UN has no problem citing it as an authoritative statistic, without mentioning any other source that might put the number at closer to, say, 200.
